Will there be a 4G+ update for the Mac OS X 10.6?
When will there be a update for the clear 4G+ USB Mobile Modem (3G/WiMAX) support for Mac OS X 10.6.
-
We are looking at a June 2010 release for updated drivers. I personally use a MacBook Pro so I have been waiting for this update as well..
-
-
-
That's the entire point! The 4G coverage areas are too small and far between to really be worth the monthly price. That isn't your fault, in terms of wireless, your company is still in its infancy. Hence, people who do "any" traveling need a 3G/4G card. However, quite a number of us are Mac users. June is too far away. Either release the Franklin U301 or release Mac Drivers for the U300 by conclusion of Business on May 14, 2010.
-
-
I've got 10.6.3 installed and the 4G USBw25100 usb modem dose not work.
-
-
-
-
-
I wish it were that easy....I promise you we are not delaying the drivers in any way....as soon as they are given to us we will release them. We don't develop the drivers, the manufacturers do so we have no control over when they are released.
-
I called the manufacturer, and actually spoke to an engineer. Verbatim from Franklin Wireless, "We have no plans to release any Mac drivers for the U300 as it is end of life. We now offer the U301 which is fully Mac compatible."
They are NOT making Mac drivers for this device because they no longer manufacture the device. They no longer even support the device. -

Thanks for your comments. We wanted to address your concerns about Clearwireās support for the Mac OS.
Today, nearly all of our products are available for Mac OS based devices, many have been since we launched the first CLEAR market early last year. We recognize the early adopter nature of Mac users and consider them to be an important part of the CLEAR customer base. The u300 was released prior our first OS X compatible CM. Given the timing of the release, as well as some technical issues, OS X drivers were never made available for the u300. This product is in the minority but we are sorry for the inconvenience this has caused our loyal Mac user base.
As our device line-up evolves and new 4G and dual-mode products enter the market, we will continue to develop the appropriate support for Macs. We are committed to supporting the Mac OS with all of our products going forward.- view 4 more comments

DirtDiver,
I understand your frustration, but some of the things you write are simply not correct. You stated:
"I've been to several different Clear corporate locations, and once I challenge them to show me, they finally admit that they are still selling the Clear SPOT to mac users as the clear modems don't work. Even the 4g ones. I was even scammed into buying a PXU1900 and guess what? That doesn't work either."
I am currently using a 4G PXU1900 modem as I write this on my MacBook Pro. Inside the mall nearby I get 10.61 megabits throughput according to Speedtest.net, even in the middle of the day:

At home, I get 4-7 megabits regularly, which leaps to 10.75 late at night.
When I got my Clear service at a Clear store, I brought my Mac with me and the store manager set everything up for me. She was very knowledgeable about the Mac setup process.
To say the PXU1900 doesn't work with Macs is false. To say that Clear locations only sell Clear Spot to Mac users is also false.
Frustration leads to anger which leads to embellishment. I'm sorry you are having problems with Clear service in your area. Maybe you live in a suburb or some small town or some place not ideally suited to Clear service. In that case, you should choose a service more appropriate for you. But to try to imply that your experiences with Clear service and Macs is universal is disingenuous. -

Guys, download Sprint SmartView from www.sprint.com. This is what I did (with the 300 card):
I used Parallels and the CLEAR software to activate my card on the 4G/3G network.
Then, I installed Sprint SmartView on the Mac part. Started up Sprint SmartView, and I can connect via 3G!
I can't connect via 4G (it won't let me click the "Connect" button), but I'll keep messing with it. This could also be due to a low signal where I am right now. -

will clear be supporting 4g/3g for a mac soon. I travel a lot for my biz now and need access! Thanks!

Clear's usb modems do not work with OS X. Regardless of what they say on the site, I have not been able to get them to work. I've tried two different USB modems, a PXU1900 and the older Motorola usb modem, and neither work. OS X knows it's plugged in, but the Clear software doesn't do anything. I have tried multiple times to uninstall and then reinstall the Clear software, even have re-installed OS X, and have used various macs to try them out on. And it's not a service issue, with the Clear spot they work, albeit slowly thanks to outdated drivers that Clear refuses to update like the rest of the Cradlepoint resellers.
Assuming this horrible excuse for a forum actually let's me post, maybe we'll see Clear get off their behinds and get onto the manufacturers and get us working drivers. It's no excuse to say that Clear has no control over Cradepoint, Motorola, Foxconn, etc, because they do. Fact is, if Clear as a corporation clamped down on manufacturers and demanded answers, they'd get it. Clear doesn't care about OS X users, plain and simple.

USB modems do not work with OS X..-
Spreading lies is not beneficial to anyone, dirtdiver.
You state:
Clear's usb modems do not work with OS X.
This is false. I am using a Clear PXU1900 USB modem on my MacBook Pro with Snow Leopard right now as I type this in a coffee shop.
You state:
Clear doesn't care about OS X users, plain and simple.
A Clear store manager personally set up my modem on my MacBook Pro. So again, your statement is false.
Please do not spread lies on the internet. It is childish and not useful. -

I tell you what, since you wish to call me a liar, how about I make a video where I follow Clear's instructions perfectly, and we'll see if it works. I'll even do it on a brand new Mac, with a brand new fresh install of Snow Leopard. I'll even do it on several Macs. Why would I waste my time to come on here and complain about it if it actually worked? Don't you think that would be counter productive?
I wish it did work, but just like this sorry excuse of a forum, it doesn't work. I don't doubt that it works for someone. It just doesn't work for me, and apparently plenty of others on the internet.
http://discussions.apple.com/message....
Take a look at the OFFICIAL Apple forums and see that over 40 replies later, people are having issues with it. You clearly work for Clear, and that's fine, but don't lie to the public and make it appear that your own customers are just dishonest. Thanks to this post, I now have the "ammunition" I need to show that not only does Clear not care about all it's customers, but it calls them dishonest. Thanks. -
-
More falsehoods.
You state:
You clearly work for Clear, and that's fine
I do not work for Clear, or any other telecom company. I run my own small business. I signed up for Clear about a month ago and have been very satisfied.
I have seen the thread on the Apple web site. That is user-generated content. It does not constitute an endorsement of your position on Clear by Apple, and is irrelevant whether it is hosted on the "OFFICIAL" Apple domain or not. It does not add any weight to your blanket assertions.
In any deployment of thousands or millions of customers there are always going to be a certain percentage for whom it doesn't work. You are one of those people. It's time to move on and find another ISP.
You state that Clear doesn't work with Macs. I pointed out that this is simply not true. What you can say correctly is that Clear doesn't work with YOUR Mac, but to make a blanket statement that Clear doesn't work with Macs is a falsehood.
Similarly, you state that Clear doesn't care about Macs. This, too, is a falsehood, as I noted that a store manager personally set up my Clear USB modem on my MacBook Pro.
Which brings up another point -- if I worked for Clear, I would have signed up for service at a store in the mall. Duh.
Also, complaining about the Clear forum software also makes you look dumb. Clear didn't write the forum software. It's by a company called GetSatisfaction. I agree that the forum doesn't work very well, but I'm not dumb enough to blame Clear for it. -
-
So, you don't blame Clear even though they choose to pay for and use GetSatisfaction's service? That's ridiculous. My money goes to Clear. Clear chooses to use a service that is less than stellar. Yes, that gives me a right to say something. After all, I am a customer.
Secondly, if you're anywhere near Metro Atlanta, I'll gladly buy you lunch if you wish to give it a shot. I've attempted this same install on several Macs. It's not just mine. You remind me of a adolescent kid with how defensive you get. It's pretty obvious you're probably one of the thousand resellers of Clear's service. Do you really use the word "duh?" And then you want to call me names?
So my question is this, you're telling me that Clear does care, and that I'm the only one that has issues, then why is it you find plenty of others online who also have issues?
Where I live, and the many places around metro Atlanta I travel in, I get service using the Clear Spot. Sometimes it's not great (0.5-2mbps) and sometimes it is pretty good (6mbps or so), I've unfortunately never seen the 10 you posted, but that's great you got that. What I'm saying is, obviously someone out there has problems, I'm not alone. It works for you? Fantastic, consider yourself lucky. The rest of us (btw, I'm a developer on the Apple platform and iPhone/iPad, not a "novice") are having issues. As a company, if someone is having issues, the answer isn't "move on to another ISP" it's "let's resolve this."
Apparently if people are taking the time to get on Clear's board and say it doesn't work, they want it fixed. I pay money for a service that doesn't work as expected. And to say "it works because Clear SPOT is available" is a terrible answer. -
-
To the contrary, I do blame Clear for choosing to utilize forum software that I don't like. But I don't see the point of making a public issue of it.
I'm not in Atlanta. I'm on the other side of the country.
I have already responded to all of the other questions you pose. Please re-read what I have written. -
-
This is their official support forum. We are all on here to help shape better service out of this company. Obviously I want Clear to be better, grow, and succeed. Otherwise I'd just leave them. They've already offered to break the contract minus fees because their tech support can't get it to work. Even after taking my Macbook Pro to a corporate owned location.
What you fail to see is that I do want things to work. I want Clear to succeed, especially since I love it that companies like AT&T and Comcast have competition now. I just want things to be honest. Telling people Mac drivers always work just isn't the case. -
-
And telling people Mac drivers never work just isn't the case, as well.
Thank you for proving my point. -
-
I am a MacBook owner and I have had my fair share of my Clear USB modem not working when someone with a PC and the exact same modem sitting right next to me works just fine.
The last time I had trouble with my modem was when I did a software update. It was about a week before mine started working again. I was very frustrated because Clear could not tell me why it wasn't working. Then, out of nowhere, it started working just fine again. I need to do a software update again, but I am afraid to because I am wondering if this will affect my Clear modem again.
I had some problems with it again on Saturday night, but it finally started working just fine again.
Since I use mine only late at night at work, I get frustrated when it doesn't work. It will tell me that I am connected to the network, yet, I can't seem to even get my home page to load.
When it works, it does work well. I find that the modem only works with the USB next to the microphone port. I do get high speed type surfing. Not sure if it is 4G or not, but it is acceptable for me.
I would like to see Clear get some more Mac experts on their team. I would say that is the most frustrating thing for me when I need to call them with tech support issues. -

I just got my Clearwire 4G USB modem today. I was up and running in minutes. I noticed the difference between your setup and Dirtdiver is that he doesn't have the en2 network interface configured. The installation routine set this up for me. Everything works fine. I even compared throughput versus Verizon FIOS in a blog post I just put up at http://ekive.blogspot.com/2010/06/bac...

Clear has a new modem for 4G+. However it is not in every market. It was JUST release. I am waiting for mine, somewhat impatiently. Corporate Escalations has said she will send me one as soon as she gets one to send me. They said July 1st the new modem will be in Philly, but I want it before because I go on vacation on July 2nd and I want the new modem with me before I go. Any Clear cust. support reps out there that can help with that, I would be very happy.

Did the person you spoke with mention a model number? I'd like to see what it looks like.

Sierra Wireless Series S. I think its the 250 but not positive.

I will tell you I am a web designer and got my card Series for my MAC on Friday and I will tell you its amazing. Works WAY better than the other 4G only card did and had it working #G in a rural town on the Oregon coast. Please keep up the good work. I will admit I have had my challenges with Clear CS BUT hoping this is a new leaf as I will be traveling a lot for work and it will have to perform. So far GREAT!

UPDATE: Just received my series S modem and it works great with my MacBook Pro (10.5.8).... Only problem is that this modem will NOT work with my CLEAR Spot as the sales person had promised. According to the tech support person I spoke with today they are waiting for a firmware upgrade for the CLEAR Spot but don't have a date when that upgrade will be available. Three steps forward and one step backwards... Tech support folks are hoping sometime after July 1st 2010

Philpakbikes: 10.5.8? No interest in Snow Leopard or no Core 2 Duo proc?
I'm very disappointed in the Clearspot. My cellphone can run Wifi, BT & UTMS HSxPA 3G and play a video for over 6 hours straight and it's smaller than the Clearspot. The Clearspot? 45 minutes. I understand 4G is more power demanding that 3G, but 3G + Bluetooth should be more than 4G alone. Still, even if 4G sucks more than that, it should last at least 3, 4 or even 5 hours. NOT 45 minutes.
And then the updates.... They have them for the non-clear branded ones. But the clear branded one is always months behind. Clear says its Cradlepoint's fault. Cradlepoint says its Clear's fault.
I think Clear should drop Cradlepoint and get a new designer/manufacturer. Get Asus to design and make one. They have an office in Germany with some of their best designers and their manufacturing plant in China an pump out 1M units per week at least. -

philpakbikes, where are you located. I just called and Clear told me that this modem is only being tested in "select" markets. I am in Austin, which was one of the rollout cities for Clear. I couldn't convince the rep to send me one. He said sometime in July.
-
Salem Oregon.... not sure why CLEAR would say only "select" markets since I guessing the new modem has nothing to do with the CLEAR network BUT everything to do with the platform and OS its plugged into.
Also CLEAR told me that all the software bits and such that initialize the modem are built into the modem so it doesn't need any additional software that came with some of their other modems. -

i live in Seattle and received mine about a week ago and so far it kicks ass. Had to see a client on the oregon coast and the 3G worked great!

I live in Seattle and received my S series a week ago for my MBP and so far its kicking butt! 3G worked great in a rural coast town in Oregon. This card is way better than the previous models. The 4G seems to also work better in areas where before it was spotty.

Is it the Sierra Wireless AirCardĀ® 250U, kind of a round body?
http://www.sierrawireless.com/product... -
-
its sierra wireless alright and its round! In the past sierra wireless always worked better. its funny how clear kept saying we need to get the drivers. I figured it was a new card. It cracks me up how they can not just tell the truth but seriously this card so far is great. I am a web designer and was downloading a site last night in 3G and it did very well while on the side of the road.

I was able to get the modem to work under my windows partition but was VERY uncomfortable working under the windows environment. Need I say more... ;-)
Phil
Franklin Wireless said "We have no plans to bring the U300 to the Mac Platform. The U300 is End-Of-Life. We now have the U301 and it is fully Mac 10.5+ compatible"
Clear says "We will have 4G+ on the mac soon" 6 months later.... "We will have 4G+ on the mac soon" 2 months later... "We will have 4G+ on the mac in June 2010".
June is over a month away. I am a software developer with a bachelors in Computer Engineering from Penn State. It doesn't take that long to make drivers for a product like this.
BTW, I am using Boot Camp. Every once in awhile I need to run a program that only works under the Windows environment. I only do this in my "safe room" and then "smudge" my entire shop to drive out any "Windows Demons" that might have crept out of my Mac. ;-)
With the Clear Spot setup I am able to get 4G+ WiMax download speeds that average about 3 to 4 Mbs (bits/sec). I use the Speakeasy speed test. I am in Salem Oregon and the test site I connect to is in Washington state. My test location was about a block from the Clear tower.
also, if you do decide to go with this option, i highly recommend making the purchase at a clear location, rather then over the phone.. Im still waiting for a clear spot which i ordered on 5/2/10 to show up.. a few days after making the purchase, i thought the overnight shipping was taking a bit longer then it should, so made a call to clear.. the rep explained to me it could take up to 2 days for the order to be processed, and the "overnight shipping" could take up to 10 business days. I wish the sales rep i ordered this through would have mentioned that rather then "it will be at your house tomorrow." I had to buy another clear spot at a clear store just to use while i wait for the other to arrive.
