Add mobile service at major airports
Clear should consider adding towers at the major airports. I was just at LAX and was disappointed that I could not use the service at the airport or airport hotel. (I forgot to look at the map before I left on the trip.) There are a lot of road warriors out there that would love 4G service at the airports. You could probably cover the top 20 airports with only 20-30 towers. It would be a great selling point. You don't need to service the whole city initially, just hit the airports.

Thank you for the suggestion! We are in the process of expanding. You can sign up for our Clear Insider to get updates on our coverage area at http://www.clear.com/insider. You can also check out our current coverage area at http://www.clear.com/coverage. Remember, our coverage maps can’t guarantee coverage, but rather approximate your anticipated coverage. Certain areas may have limited or no coverage, and various factors (e.g. terrain, foliage, buildings) may affect your actual coverage at a particular location.

I used to travel extensively for business, but have slowed down recently due to school. Having not being able to travel during my initial trial period, I was vastly disappointed to find out that neither of the two airports I most often fly through had decent enough service to make a connection. Those two airports are DFW and IAH (Bush Intercontinental, Houston).
I realize that both Dallas and Houston are recent additions to Clear's expanding coverage area, but I would think that since a great majority of your customers would be business travelers, that you would put a greater emphasis on ensuring that major airports in your metro areas are fully saturated with wireless coverage.
I might've held off on my contract commitment had I realized this. Please correct this as soon as possible.
On the flip side, having Clear now in Chicago saved my behind when my technicians' hard drive failed and I had to redownload a bunch of files over my work VPN. Signal strength was 30-50% in Hinsdale, IL.

It did not work at Austin,TX airport though Austin is in the network list.
Coverage is very limited even within the covered cities. -

Airports are notoriously bad for reception, usually do to their immense size and steel framework. I understand the issues at the big airports like DFW and IAH. AUS, however, I've never had a problem with as long as I was on the Continental/United side. I doubt there would be very good coverage near the food court because of the centralized location, all the equipment and the number of walls & people standing between you and the tower.
I'm willing to bet that a lot of the other cell phone providers have gone ahead and installed repeaters within the airports. Perhaps Clear should be doing the same...
Here's a better question, however, and it has nothing to do with Clear...
Why is it that the City of Austin provides free municipal WiFi downtown, however, contracts with Boingo to charge for WiFi access at the City of Austin owned and operated airport? Then we wouldn't even need clear their at all!-
Downtown is mostly citizens, and the airport (AUS) is visitors. Pay WiFi is a money (revenue) generator.

Most other cities and airports do the opposite, pay for municipal and receive free at the airport. Airports like Austin are less full of visitor's than business people who live and work in Austin, especially during the week. The airport makes plenty of money off the taxes and runway service fees that the airlines tack on to our ticket prices. There's no reason why they shouldn't provide free WiFi to all their customers, local citizens and visitor's alike.

Did not work at Logan Airport for me and when I contacted Clear account services, they said they couldn't even address the problem unless I gave them the exact street address of the airport. Useless service.

There is no excuse not to have included Airports in their coverage model. Had I known, I would have delayed my commitment. It would give CLEAR a very high satisfaction rating.

Though last I checked, most major airports had their own internal Wifi, also getting WiMax included at the location of the airports themselves I would imagine takes a lot of negotiation with each airport. IT'd be a great idea if you want *real broadband* over the shared Wifi there, but I can imagine the hassle of convincing each airport to include it.

Works at Houston Hobby Airport (HOU). Not fast, but adequate for most uses.
Kind of iffy at Las Vegas McCarran (LAS) -

I don't know why you would have to get the "approval" of an airport to put up an antenna outside the airport property. I don't know the range of Clear's antennas, but it is probably several miles. Also, someone commented that Clear would compete with the pay WiFi at the airports ... isn't that the point. I am paying for Clear, why wouldn't I want them to compete with the airport's pay service?

I like that idea also. I think the limiting factor would be how much each of the airports would charge Clear for installing their network in the airports.
I wonder if Sprint will be looking at buidling that side out once they start rolling out more of their 4G phones and I am making an assumption that Sprint already has repeaters and cell sites in most of the airports already. -
-
I'm sure if Clear 'donated' enough equipment and service to each municipal airport, they would all snap it up. Once you had the top 5 or 6 airports online, the rest would do it, just to keep up with the other airports.

If the airports balked at the electrical power usage, no problem just install solar panels..... (with battery backup).

I work across the street from BDL in Hartford, CT (actually its Windsor Locks, CT). My ClearSpot 4G shows green, and gets a great signal. Clear must have put in a tower right at the airport. The coverage is great if you ever fly here.
